How to Reduce Video File Size Without Losing Quality
A 4K video from a modern smartphone can be 1–2 GB per minute. Here is how to make it 5–10× smaller with imperceptible quality loss.
Why Videos Are Large
Video file size = bitrate × duration. Higher bitrate = better quality but larger files. Modern compression (H.265/HEVC and AV1) achieves the same visual quality at half the bitrate of older H.264.
Method 1: Switch From H.264 to H.265 (Best Single Improvement)
H.265 achieves the same visual quality at 50% of the H.264 file size. This is the single largest improvement for most videos.
Using HandBrake:
- Open HandBrake → load your video
- Video tab → Video Codec: H.265 (x265)
- Quality: RF 24 (RF 18–28 range; lower = better quality, larger file)
- Container: MP4
- Start Encode
An 8 GB H.264 file often becomes 3–4 GB as H.265 at RF 24 with identical visual quality.

Method 2: Adjust Constant Rate Factor (CRF/RF)
The RF (Rate Factor) controls the quality-to-size trade-off:
- RF 18: Near-lossless. Use for archiving.
- RF 22: Excellent. Virtually indistinguishable from source.
- RF 26: Good. Some subtle quality loss on complex motion.
- RF 30: Noticeable compression artefacts.
For sharing videos: RF 24–26 is the sweet spot for size vs quality.
Method 3: Reduce Resolution
If your video is 4K (3840×2160) and viewers have 1080p screens:
- In HandBrake Dimensions: Resolution Limit → 1920×1080
- 4K → 1080p reduces file size by ~75%
Method 4: Target a Specific File Size
For WhatsApp (100 MB limit) or email (25 MB limit):
Calculate required bitrate: (Target MB × 8192) / (duration in seconds) = bitrate in kbps
For a 3-minute video under 100 MB: (100 × 8192) / 180 ≈ 4551 kbps
In HandBrake: Switch from Constant Quality to Average Bitrate → 4500 kbps.
Method 5: Trim Unnecessary Content
Use a free editor (DaVinci Resolve, iMovie, CapCut) to cut:
- Silent intros and outros
- Repeated segments
- B-roll that doesn't add value
Cutting 20% of a video's duration reduces file size by exactly 20% at the same quality.
Real-World Results (Typical)
