Frequently asked questions
For full-width hero images: 1920 pixels wide. For blog post content images: 1200 pixels wide. For thumbnails or card images: 400–800 pixels wide. For profile photos: 400×400 pixels. Always enable retina support by using 2× the display size (e.g., 1600px for an 800px display slot).
Downscaling (reducing dimensions) does not reduce visible quality when done with a good algorithm — the output image looks sharp at its new size. Upscaling (enlarging) always introduces blurriness because pixel data must be created from nothing. Never upscale for quality-sensitive uses.
For Instagram feed posts: 1:1 (square, 1080×1080px) or 4:5 portrait (1080×1350px — recommended, takes more screen space). For Stories and Reels: 9:16 (1080×1920px). For landscape: 1.91:1 (1080×566px).
Downscaling (making smaller) uses pixel interpolation to combine existing pixels — the result is sharp and accurate at the new size. Upscaling (making larger) adds pixels by estimating values from the surrounding area, which reduces apparent sharpness. Always downscale from the original source; never expect upscaling to restore detail.
Common social media dimensions: Instagram posts (1080×1080 px square or 1080×1350 portrait), Twitter/X cards (1200×675 px 16:9), Facebook posts (1200×630 px), LinkedIn posts (1200×627 px). Always use the platform's recommended dimensions to avoid automatic cropping that hides important content.
