FLAC File Not Playing on iPhone or Android

FLAC audio files do not play on iPhone or Android — the default music apps show an error or do not recognise the format.

FLAC on iPhone (iOS)

iOS does not support FLAC playback in the built-in Music app (Apple Music). Apple's ecosystem uses AAC and ALAC (Apple Lossless).

Fix 1: Use VLC for iOS (Free) VLC for iOS plays FLAC, MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, and virtually every audio format:

  1. Install VLC for Mobile from the App Store (free)
  2. Transfer your FLAC files to VLC via iTunes File Sharing, or the VLC local network server
  3. VLC plays FLAC at full quality

Fix 2: Use Plex If your FLAC library is on a computer:

  1. Install Plex Media Server on your computer (free)
  2. Install Plex on your iPhone
  3. Plex streams your FLAC library to your phone (transcodes to AAC for the Music app, or plays native FLAC in the Plex app)

Fix 3: Convert FLAC to ALAC (Apple Lossless) ALAC is Apple's lossless format — identical quality to FLAC but plays in the Music app:

  1. In iTunes/Music: Edit → Preferences → Import Settings → Apple Lossless Encoder
  2. Drag FLAC files into the library → right-click → Create Apple Lossless Version

FLAC on Android

Android supports FLAC natively from Android 3.1 (2011) onward. If FLAC isn't playing:

Fix 1: Check the Default Player The default Google Music or Files app may not handle FLAC. Try:

  • Poweramp (paid, excellent FLAC support)
  • VLC for Android (free, supports all formats)
  • Neutron Music Player (paid, audiophile features)

Fix 2: Check the FLAC File Itself Some FLAC files use uncommon configurations (24-bit/192 kHz) that some Android devices don't support:

  • Try playing in VLC — if VLC fails, the file may be corrupt
  • Check the sample rate with MediaInfo; if > 96 kHz, convert to 44.1 kHz FLAC

Fix 3: Check Available Storage FLAC files are large. If your phone is nearly full, the player may fail to buffer the file properly. Free up storage or stream from a computer via Plex.
