HEIC Photos Not Opening on Windows 10 or 11
iPhone HEIC photos show as unsupported or unknown file type on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Why Windows Cannot Open HEIC Files
Windows 10 and 11 do not include built-in HEIC support. The HEVC (H.265) codec used by HEIC is patent-encumbered, and Microsoft requires a paid codec licence. iPhones save photos in HEIC by default since iOS 11 (2017).
Fix 1: Install the Free HEIF Image Extensions (Recommended)
Microsoft provides a free extension that adds HEIC support to Windows:
- Open the Microsoft Store (search "Microsoft Store" in the Start menu)
- Search for "HEIF Image Extensions"
- Install the free extension
- HEIC files will now open in the Photos app and show thumbnails in File Explorer
Note: You may also need "HEVC Video Extensions" (may cost ~$1) for full HEIC playback.
Fix 2: Use a Free Viewer
Several free applications open HEIC without any extensions:
- IrfanView (free): Install IrfanView + All Plugins; right-click HEIC → Open With → IrfanView
- XnView MP (free): Supports HEIC natively; opens and converts in batch
- GIMP 2.10.28+: Can open and edit HEIC files with the HEIF plugin
Fix 3: Convert HEIC to JPEG on Your iPhone Before Transferring
Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic
This setting automatically converts HEIC to JPEG when you connect your iPhone to Windows via USB.
Fix 4: Use iCloud for Windows
Install iCloud for Windows. When your iPhone photos sync via iCloud, they are automatically converted to JPEG format for Windows compatibility.
Fix 5: Use Google Photos
Upload your iPhone photos to Google Photos (auto-backup). When you download from Google Photos on Windows, photos are delivered as JPEG.
Prevention
Change your iPhone camera to shoot JPEG: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This produces larger files but ensures Windows compatibility without any conversion.
