MOV File Not Playing on Windows — Fix QuickTime Error
MOV video files from iPhone or Mac show an error or play without video on Windows Media Player.

Why MOV Files Don't Play on Windows
Windows does not include native QuickTime support. Microsoft discontinued QuickTime for Windows in 2016 due to security vulnerabilities. MOV files from iPhone, iMovie, or Final Cut Pro may fail to open or play without video/audio because the required codecs are not installed.
Fix 1: Use VLC Media Player (Free, Recommended)
VLC includes all codecs needed for MOV playback and works immediately with no additional installation:
- Download VLC Media Player from videolan.org (free)
- Install VLC
- Right-click the MOV file → Open With → VLC Media Player
VLC handles virtually every MOV variant including H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and MJPEG.
Fix 2: Install K-Lite Codec Pack (Windows Media Player Fix)
If you prefer Windows Media Player:
- Download K-Lite Codec Pack (Basic or Standard) — free from codecguide.com
- Install (accept defaults)
- Restart Windows Media Player
- MOV files using H.264 codec will now play in Windows Media Player
Note: K-Lite does not support ProRes MOV files — use VLC for those.
Fix 3: Use MPC-HC (Media Player Classic)
MPC-HC is a lightweight, open-source video player with built-in codec support:
- Download MPC-HC from github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc
- Install and open your MOV file
Fix 4: Convert MOV to MP4 (Permanent Solution)
If you always receive MOV files from iPhone or Mac, converting to MP4 once solves the problem permanently. Use HandBrake (free):
- Download HandBrake → open your MOV file
- Choose preset: Fast 1080p30
- Click Start Encode → creates an MP4 that plays everywhere
Fix 5: Check the Codec Inside the MOV
Not all MOV files use the same codec. iPhone uses H.264 or HEVC; Final Cut Pro uses ProRes. Use MediaInfo (free tool) to identify the codec:
- H.264/HEVC MOV: Opens in VLC or with K-Lite codecs
- ProRes MOV: Requires VLC or DaVinci Resolve; does not play in Windows Media Player
