MKV files contain high-quality video with multiple audio tracks and embedded subtitles. Many smart TVs and streaming devices support MKV natively — if yours doesn't, here are the workarounds.
Check Native TV Support First
Many modern smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL) support MKV via USB drive:
- Copy the MKV file to a USB drive (formatted as exFAT or FAT32)
- Plug the USB drive into your TV
- Use the TV's media player to navigate to the file
If the TV shows the file but plays with no audio, the audio codec inside the MKV (DTS, TrueHD) may not be supported — try a file with AAC or AC3 audio.
Method 1: Plex Media Server (Best for Large Libraries)
- Install Plex Media Server on your computer (free)
- Add your MKV files to a Plex library
- Install the Plex app on your smart TV, Roku, Firestick, Chromecast, or Apple TV
- Stream your MKV files — Plex transcodes unsupported codecs automatically
Method 2: VLC for Chromecast
- Install VLC on your phone (Android or iOS)
- Transfer the MKV to your phone (or open from a local network share)
- In VLC, tap the cast icon → select your Chromecast
- VLC streams the MKV to your TV
Method 3: Infuse (Apple TV and iOS)
- Install Infuse on Apple TV (free with limited features, Pro subscription unlocks all)
- Connect to your NAS, computer, or cloud storage where MKV files are stored
- Infuse plays MKV files directly on Apple TV with full subtitle and audio track support
Method 4: Firestick — Kodi or VLC
- Install Kodi or VLC on your Amazon Firestick via the App Store
- Add your media source (USB, NAS, or cloud storage)
- Play MKV files — both apps support all MKV codecs natively
Method 5: Convert MKV to a TV-Friendly Format
If all else fails, convert the MKV to H.264 MP4 which every device supports:
- Use HandBrake: Open MKV → choose Fast 1080p30 preset → Export as MP4
- If the MKV contains H.264 + AAC, you can "remux" without re-encoding using MKVToolNix → MP4
