PDF Has Blank Pages When Converted From Word
When you export a Word document to PDF, some or all pages appear blank in the resulting PDF.

Why Word-to-PDF Conversion Creates Blank Pages
Cause 1: Blank Pages From Section Breaks
Word uses section breaks to change page layout (orientation, margins, columns). Certain section break types — particularly Odd Page and Even Page section breaks — force content onto the next odd or even-numbered page. They insert blank pages automatically to maintain the constraint.
Fix:
- In Word: View → Draft (shows special characters)
- Press Ctrl+Shift+8 (Windows) to show all non-printing characters
- Find double section breaks or "Next Page" section breaks followed by empty space
- Delete the empty paragraphs between section breaks
- Re-export to PDF
Cause 2: Empty Pages at the End
An invisible empty paragraph at the very end of the document creates a blank final page in the PDF.
Fix:
- Press Ctrl+End to jump to the very end of the document
- Delete backward until the document ends at the last character of real content
- Re-export
Cause 3: White Text on White Background
The page appears blank but actually has white text on a white background — invisible but present.
Check: In Word, Ctrl+A to select all → change font colour to black → scan for content on the "blank" pages.
Cause 4: Header/Footer Content Only, No Body
If a page has header or footer content but no body text or images, it looks blank when converted.
Fix: Delete the empty body paragraphs on those pages, or add page content.
Cause 5: PDF Viewer Rendering Issue
Sometimes the blank pages are only blank in a specific PDF viewer. Try opening in Chrome, Adobe Reader, and another viewer. If one shows content and another does not, the issue is the viewer, not the PDF.

Re-Exporting Correctly
When re-exporting from Word:
Windows: File → Save As → PDF, or File → Export → Create PDF/XPS
macOS: File → Print → PDF → Save as PDF (at the bottom of the print dialog)
The Mac Print → PDF method uses macOS's built-in PDF renderer and often resolves issues caused by Word's built-in exporter.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Word document have extra blank pages?
Blank pages in Word are almost always caused by empty paragraphs, page breaks, or section breaks. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 to reveal all non-printing characters and find the invisible page breaks creating the blank pages. Delete the empty paragraphs or section breaks.
How do I delete a blank page in Word?
Place your cursor on the blank page and press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show non-printing characters. You will see a paragraph mark (¶). Select it and delete it. If the blank page persists, there may be a section break — look for a dotted line labeled "Section Break" and delete it.
Why does my PDF have a blank first page?
A blank first page usually means there is an empty paragraph or page break before the actual content. In Word, use Ctrl+Home to go to the beginning and delete any blank lines or page breaks above the first line of real content.
