Frequently asked questions

Our Repair PDF tool is most effective against missing or broken cross-reference tables, which covers the vast majority of real-world corruption cases (interrupted downloads, application crashes during save). It cannot recover files where the content body itself has been physically overwritten or zeroed.

Adobe Reader's built-in repair is basic. Our tool attempts a deeper reconstruction of the PDF structure — rebuilding the cross-reference table from scratch and recovering embedded objects. Try uploading the file even if Reader has already failed to repair it.

Encryption can sometimes mask structural errors. The repair tool will attempt to process the file, but if it is encrypted with AES-256 and you do not have the password, the underlying content remains inaccessible even after structural repair.

PDF viewers have different tolerances for structural errors. Adobe Reader is strict; Chrome's built-in viewer and some mobile apps are more lenient and will display a malformed PDF anyway. If the file opens in one viewer but not another, it has structural issues that our repair tool can correct to make it universally compatible.
