Presentation Animations Not Playing
Fix PowerPoint animations that do not play, are skipped, or appear static when presenting.

Why PowerPoint Animations Stop Working
Presentation animations may fail due to hardware acceleration issues, Presenter View settings, file corruption, or incompatibilities between PowerPoint versions. Here are the most effective solutions.
Fix 1: Run in Slideshow Mode
Animations only play in Slideshow mode, not in Normal or Reading view. Press F5 (or Fn+F5 on Mac) to start from the beginning, or Shift+F5 to start from the current slide.
Fix 2: Check Animation Triggers
In the Animations pane (View → Animations pane), verify each animation's trigger:
- On Click — requires a click or arrow key press to trigger
- After Previous — plays automatically after the previous animation ends
- With Previous — plays simultaneously with the previous animation
Change triggers that aren't behaving as expected.
Fix 3: Disable Hardware Acceleration
File → Options → Advanced → Display → uncheck "Use hardware graphics acceleration". Some graphics cards interfere with animation rendering. Restart PowerPoint after changing this setting.
Fix 4: Repair the File
File → Open → Open and Repair (click the dropdown next to Open). This fixes XML errors in the animation definitions that can prevent playback.
Fix 5: Check for Cross-Version Compatibility
Animations created in PowerPoint 2019 or 365 may not play in older versions (2013, 2016). If the audience has an older version, either:
- Use simpler animations (Appear, Fade) that work across all versions
- Export to PDF (all animation states are static but reliably displayed)
- Export as a video (File → Export → Create a Video)
Fix 6: Re-create the Animation
If a specific animation is broken, delete it from the Animations pane and re-apply it from scratch. Sometimes the XML definition becomes corrupted but the slide content itself is intact.
Keynote Animations Lost When Exporting to PPTX
Keynote's Magic Move and Keynote-exclusive transitions do not export to PPTX. They are replaced with a generic Dissolve. Keep the Keynote source file if you need to preserve these effects.
