How to Remove Track Changes from a Word Document
Track Changes records every edit made to a document, showing insertions, deletions, and formatting changes in colored markup. Before sharing a final document, you typically want to accept (or reject) all changes.
How to Accept All Changes at Once
- Open the document in Microsoft Word
- Go to the Review tab
- Click Accept → Accept All Changes
- To also remove comments: Click Delete → Delete All Comments in Document
- Save the document
How to Remove Changes Before Checking Them
If you want to finalize without reviewing each change:
- Review tab → Accept → Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking
- This accepts everything and turns off future tracking.
Hiding vs. Removing
- Show Markup → No Markup hides changes visually but doesn't remove them. If you share this document, the recipient can click "Show Markup" to reveal all edits. This is not the same as removing them.
- To truly remove: you must accept or reject each change.
Check for Lingering Changes (Document Inspector)
Go to File → Info → Check for Issues → Inspect Document. Run the inspector and look for "Tracked Changes." If found, click "Remove All."
Why Changes Appear When Shared
If the document was shared as DOCX and the recipient's Word shows changes, it means the changes were saved in the file (not hidden). Always finalize with Accept All before sending a "clean" version.

Frequently asked questions
How do I accept all tracked changes in a Word document?
Review tab → Changes group → click the dropdown arrow on "Accept" → click "Accept All Changes". This permanently incorporates all edits and removes all revision markup. Use "Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking" to also disable change tracking for future edits.
How do I hide tracked changes without accepting them?
In the Review tab, change the display mode from "All Markup" to "No Markup". This hides the red strikethroughs and comment bubbles visually — but the changes are still embedded in the document and will reappear if anyone changes the display mode back. To permanently remove tracked changes, accept or reject each one.
How do I share a Word document without revealing tracked changes?
Option 1: Accept all changes (Review → Accept → Accept All Changes), then save. Option 2: Copy all content, paste into a new document using Paste Special → Unformatted Text. Option 3: Export to PDF — PDF export strips all tracked changes and comments from the output. Always verify the shared file shows no markup before sending.
