Overview

ODP (OpenDocument Presentation) is the presentation format of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard — the open, ISO-standardised counterpart to Microsoft's PPTX. It is the native format of LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress, and is also used by Google Slides and Calligra Stage. Like other ODF formats, ODP is a ZIP archive containing XML files.

ODP was created to provide a vendor-neutral, open-standards alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint's proprietary formats. It is required by many European government and education institutions that mandate ODF for all official documents.

Common Uses

  • LibreOffice presentations — default save format for LibreOffice Impress
  • Government and education — institutions that standardise on open-source office software
  • Long-term archival — ISO-standardised format with no vendor dependency
  • Cross-platform sharing — sharing presentations between Linux, macOS, and Windows users without Microsoft Office

Advantages

  • Open ISO standard — fully documented specification, royalty-free, no vendor lock-in
  • Free software — LibreOffice Impress (primary tool) is completely free
  • Transparent structure — ZIP + XML makes the format inspectable and archivally sound
  • Multi-platform — works identically on Windows, macOS, and Linux

Limitations

  • Microsoft PowerPoint compatibility — complex ODP animations and themes may not render correctly in PowerPoint
  • Smaller template library — fewer professionally designed templates compared to PPTX ecosystem
  • Lower corporate adoption — business environments default to PPTX; recipients may need conversion

Supported Software

  • Full support: LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress
  • Partial support: Microsoft PowerPoint 2010+, Google Slides (can open ODP)
  • Mobile: Collabora Office, OnlyOffice
