Overview
ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard — the open, ISO-standardised counterpart to Microsoft's XLSX. It is the native format of LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and Gnumeric. Like XLSX, ODS is a ZIP archive containing XML files, making it transparent and future-proof.
ODS supports the full range of spreadsheet features: multiple sheets, formulas, charts, conditional formatting, cell styles, and filters. It is particularly prevalent in educational institutions and European public organisations that standardise on LibreOffice or open-source tools.
Common Uses
- LibreOffice Calc documents — default save format for spreadsheets created in LibreOffice
- Education and public sector — schools and government bodies using LibreOffice
- Long-term data archiving — ISO-standardised format with documented specification
- Cross-platform spreadsheets — sharing data between LibreOffice users without Microsoft Office
Advantages
- Open ISO standard — fully documented, patent-free specification
- Free software — LibreOffice (primary reader/writer) is completely free
- Transparent format — ZIP + XML contents inspectable without special tools
- No vendor lock-in — not controlled by Microsoft; multiple independent implementations
Limitations
- Excel compatibility issues — complex ODS spreadsheets may not render identically in Excel
- Smaller template library — fewer business templates compared to XLSX ecosystem
- Limited enterprise adoption — IT departments standardise on XLSX; ODS requires explanation and conversion
Supported Software
- Full support: LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, Gnumeric
- Partial support: Microsoft Excel 2010+, Google Sheets (can open ODS files)
- Mobile: Collabora Office (Android/iOS), OnlyOffice
