Overview

PPTX (PowerPoint Open XML Presentation) is the modern file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint since Office 2007. Like DOCX and XLSX, a PPTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML files, images, embedded media, and theme data. This open, ZIP-based structure makes PPTX files relatively easy to inspect, repair, and import in third-party applications.

PPTX replaced the legacy binary PPT format and is now the de facto standard for presentation files. Every major presentation application — including Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and LibreOffice Impress — can open PPTX files, though some complex animations and custom themes may render differently.

Common Uses

  • Business presentations — slide decks for meetings, reports, and pitches
  • Educational materials — lectures, course slides, and training content
  • Marketing and sales — product demos, investor decks, and client proposals
  • Conferences — speaker presentations submitted to event organisers

Advantages

  • Universal compatibility — supported by PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, LibreOffice Impress, and WPS Office
  • Open ZIP structure — the internal XML format is documented and accessible; files can be repaired by editing XML
  • Rich media support — embeds images, audio, video, charts, SmartArt, and OLE objects
  • Collaboration features — supports tracked changes, comments, and real-time co-authoring in Microsoft 365

Limitations

  • Large file sizes — presentations with embedded video or many high-resolution images can exceed 100 MB
  • Cross-app fidelity — animations, custom fonts, and advanced effects may not render identically in Google Slides or Keynote
  • Not web-native — PPTX files must be uploaded or converted before sharing on the web

Supported Software

  • Windows: Microsoft PowerPoint (native), LibreOffice Impress, WPS Presentation
  • macOS/iOS: Keynote (can open and export PPTX), Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac
  • Web: Google Slides (upload and edit), Microsoft 365 (web)
  • Linux: LibreOffice Impress, OnlyOffice
