Converting MP3 to WAV gives you an uncompressed audio file suitable for video editing software, DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), and professional audio workflows that require uncompressed audio sources.

Important note: Converting MP3 → WAV does NOT recover lost quality. An MP3 has already discarded audio data that cannot be recovered. What you get is a WAV container with the same audio quality as the source MP3. This is still useful for software that requires WAV input format.

Method 1: FixFile.online Audio to WAV Converter (Free, Browser-Based)

  1. Go to FixFile.online Audio to WAV Converter
  2. Click "Select File" and choose your MP3 file
  3. Click "Convert to WAV"
  4. Download the resulting WAV file

No software installation needed — runs entirely in your browser.

Method 2: Audacity (Free, Advanced Control)

  1. Download Audacity (free, audacityteam.org)
  2. File → Import → Audio → select your MP3
  3. File → Export → Export as WAV
  4. Select "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM" (standard) or "WAV (Microsoft) signed 24-bit PCM" (high-res)
  5. Click Save

Method 3: VLC Media Player (Free, Windows and Mac)

  1. Open VLC → Media → Convert/Save (Ctrl+R)
  2. Click Add → select your MP3 → click Convert/Save
  3. In Convert dialog, click the wrench icon → Audio tab
  4. Set codec: FLAC (lossless) or switch profile to WAV
  5. Set destination (with .wav extension) → click Start

When to Convert MP3 to WAV

  • Video editing — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro accept WAV; some version combinations have MP3 sync issues
  • DAW recording — Pro Tools and some professional DAWs require uncompressed audio for reliable editing
  • Broadcasting — radio and TV broadcast workflows often require WAV source files
  • Game development — Unity and Unreal Engine work better with WAV for sound effects
