How to Extract Files from a ZIP Online
Extracting a ZIP file used to require WinZip, 7-Zip, or another installed application. The ZIP Extractor tool does it directly in your browser — nothing to install, nothing uploaded to a server.
Why Use an Online ZIP Extractor?
- No software required — Works on any device with a browser (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone)
- Completely private — Your ZIP file never leaves your device. Everything happens in JavaScript locally.
- Pick individual files — You don't have to extract everything. Click the download button next to any file.
- Extract everything at once — Click "Extract All" to download a clean, rebuilt ZIP.
Supported ZIP Types
This tool reads standard ZIP archives, including those created by Windows Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, WinZip, 7-Zip, and WinRAR's ZIP mode. It also handles many partially corrupt ZIPs — see the Repair ZIP tool if you're getting CRC errors.
ZIP File Size Limits
The file is loaded entirely into browser memory, so very large ZIPs (5 GB+) may be slow depending on your RAM. For most ZIP files under 500 MB, extraction is near-instant.
Can't Extract a Password-Protected ZIP?
Password-protected ZIPs cannot be extracted here (or anywhere) without the password. If you've forgotten the password, there's no way to recover it without brute-force tools.
Frequently asked questions
The tool supports standard ZIP archives (.zip). For other formats like 7Z, RAR, or TAR, use a desktop application such as 7-Zip (free and open-source for Windows, macOS, and Linux).
Since extraction happens in your browser, the practical limit is your device's available RAM — typically 500 MB to 2 GB. Very large archives are faster and more reliable to extract in a desktop application.
No. Password-protected (AES-encrypted) ZIP entries cannot be extracted without the correct password. The tool will detect the encryption and let you know.
ZIP archives created on Windows with non-ASCII filenames (Chinese, Japanese, or accented European characters) often use Windows-1252 or Shift-JIS encoding instead of UTF-8. When extracted on a different system, these characters appear garbled. The file contents are unaffected — only the names are wrong.
The current version extracts all files in the archive. For selective extraction, use a desktop application like 7-Zip that lets you browse the archive and pick individual entries to extract.
