How to Extract a ZIP File
ZIP is the most common compressed archive format. Here's how to extract it on every platform.
On Windows (Built-in, No Software Needed)
- Right-click the .zip file
- Select "Extract All…"
- Choose a destination folder
- Click Extract
Or simply double-click the ZIP — Windows lets you browse inside it. Drag files out, or click "Extract All" in the toolbar.
On Mac (Built-in)
Double-click the .zip file. macOS automatically extracts it to the same folder using Archive Utility. Done.
For more control (passwords, split archives): install The Unarchiver (free, Mac App Store).
On iPhone / iPad
iOS 13+ supports ZIP natively:
- Tap the .zip file in Files app or an email attachment
- It extracts automatically to the same location
On Android
Android doesn't have a built-in ZIP extractor. Install Files by Google (free) — it includes a ZIP extractor in the Browse tab.
Online (No Software, Any Device)
Use our ZIP Extractor tool: upload the ZIP, browse its contents, and download any file. Works in your browser — private, no install.
For Corrupt ZIPs
If you get "CRC error" or "unexpected end of archive," use our Repair ZIP tool to recover as many files as possible.
For Password-Protected ZIPs
You need the password. Enter it when prompted by Windows, Mac, or 7-Zip. If you've forgotten the password, see our guide on forgotten ZIP passwords.
For Large Archives (7-Zip)
Windows built-in extraction is slow for archives over 1 GB. Install 7-Zip (free) for much faster extraction and support for more formats (.7z, .rar, .tar.gz).

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Windows 10/11 and macOS both include built-in ZIP support — double-click the file to extract it. On Windows, right-click and choose "Extract All." On Mac, double-click the ZIP and a folder appears automatically. For online extraction without any software, our free ZIP Extractor tool extracts files entirely in your browser.
Corrupt ZIP errors usually mean the file was not downloaded completely, or was damaged during transfer. Check the downloaded file size against the expected size. Re-download the file over a stable connection. If corruption persists, use a ZIP repair tool to recover whatever data remains — some ZIP repair utilities can extract files even from a partially corrupt archive.
You must enter the correct password — it was set by whoever created the ZIP and there is no way to bypass strong AES-256 encryption. Weak old-format ZIP encryption (ZIP 2.0) can sometimes be cracked with tools like Hashcat, but modern 7-Zip AES-256 ZIPs are practically uncrackable without the password. If you forgot the password and it was something you set, try a dictionary attack with common variations.
