MOV files from iPhones and Macs don't play natively on Windows or most web platforms. Converting to MP4 fixes compatibility without any quality loss if done correctly.
Method 1: HandBrake (Free, Best Quality Control)
HandBrake converts MOV to MP4 with precise control over codec and quality settings.
- Download and install HandBrake (free, open-source, Mac/Windows/Linux)
- Open HandBrake → drag your MOV file onto the window
- Choose a preset: Fast 1080p30 (for web sharing) or H.265 MKV 1080p30 (for storage)
- Set Format to MP4 in the Summary tab
- Choose a destination file name
- Click Start Encode
No quality loss tip: If your MOV uses H.264 (most iPhone videos), use the "Passthru" audio option — it copies the audio stream without re-encoding.
Method 2: VLC (Free, Fastest)
- Open VLC → Media → Convert/Save (Ctrl+R)
- Click Add and select your MOV file → click Convert/Save
- In Convert, choose Profile: Video — H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
- Set destination file (with .mp4 extension)
- Click Start
Method 3: macOS Quick Export
- Open the MOV in QuickTime Player
- File → Export As → 1080p (or desired resolution)
- QuickTime automatically saves as MP4/M4V
Method 4: iMovie Export
- In iMovie, click Share → File
- Set Format to Video, Quality to Best, Compress to Better Quality
- iMovie exports as MP4
Understanding Quality Loss
MOV → MP4 with the same codec (H.264 → H.264) involves re-encoding, which reduces quality slightly. For archival, keep the original MOV. For sharing, the quality loss at high-quality settings is invisible.
